Neither side is automatically better. Andheri West may suit one family's routine; Andheri East may remove a punishing commute for another. The mistake is comparing one side's reputation with a photograph of one flat. Compare two complete set-ups instead: the flat, the building, the route to work and the monthly cost.
1. Put the commute first
List the places you go every week — office gate, school, family, station. Then test each journey from each shortlisted building, at the hour you would actually travel.
If you work at SEEPZ or around JB Nagar, Chakala or Marol, an East-side home deserves a serious look before you assume West is better. Metro Line 1 (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar) connects the two sides, but the journey still includes getting to the station and from it. Do not compare a Sunday drive with a weekday commute.
2. Decide what you want within walking distance
If your life runs around Versova, Lokhandwala or the Bungalows, living West simplifies the week. If it runs around JB Nagar or Marol, the same logic points East. Find the grocery store, pharmacy, gym and bus stop you would actually use, and walk to them on the site visit.
3. Compare like with like
Keep carpet area, building age and amenity level as close as possible. Otherwise you will mistake a difference between two buildings for a difference between East and West. Record layout, storage, light, ventilation and outlook for each flat. Check lift capacity, parking and how many homes share the common areas.
4. Compare what you keep paying
Get the full cost sheet or rental terms, not the headline rate. Add maintenance, commute costs and any immediate repairs or furnishing. In an older society, ask about major repairs already approved. In a new project, confirm which amenities come with your phase.
The practical takeaway
Score the two homes on five things: your main journey, usable space, building upkeep, daily routine and total cost. Then ask one question: if the suburb names were removed, which flat would you pick? That answer is usually more useful than the East-versus-West debate.
Frequently asked questions
Is Andheri West always more premium? No. "Premium" describes buildings, not a whole side of the suburb.
Is Andheri East better for office commuters? It depends on the office and the exact route. Test the whole journey.
Should I stretch my budget to live on one side? Only once you can name the concrete benefit and the monthly costs still feel comfortable.
